The recent resignation of Uruguay’s Football Association (UAF) board has fueled World Cup fears. The South American country is set to feature in Group D alongside England, Italy, and Costa Rica.

 Barras Bravas

The reported cause of the move seems to be the decision of the country’s government to withdraw police protection in high-profile matches involving big clubs Nacional and Penarol. Called the “barras bravas,” the fans of the two football clubs are infamous for their violence.

Violent incidents have marred recent football matches. The latest was in the 4-2 home defeat of Nacional to Newell’s Old Boys in a Libertadores Cup match.

World Cup Fears

In the resignation letter, Sebastián Bauzá said, “The well-publicised acts that have occurred in recent times show the need for [the AUF board to take] a step to one side and allow other political views to govern our football.”

This has prompted speculations about Uruguay’s chances at the World Cup. Other fans, however, believe otherwise. “Fifa is a bit more serious. I don’t think Uruguay’s place at the World Cup is at risk,” CONMEBOL President, Eugenio Figueredo, said.

Memorabilia jackets that Ringo Starr and George Harrison wore in 1965 have sold for £115,000 at an auction.

Past estimated value

Harrison’s jacket bagged £54,000, while Starr’s possession fetched £61,000, both of which include buyer’s premium. The final price of the items went past the estimated value during pre-sale valuations, which pegged the items between £20,000-£30,000.

Both jackets were from the 1965 film “Help!,” in which the members of the Fab Four wore the clothes for five days during filming. The apparel also appeared on the album cover.

A South American collector acquired a piano that Sir Paul McCartney and John Lennon used for £57,500.

The piano was used to write songs found in “Help!” and the hit piece “Yesterday.”

American director Richard Lester sold the items at an auction in Liverpool.

Nothing from McCartney

A few of Sir McCartney’s belongings, however, were pulled out of the auction after his lawyers challenged the legality of selling them. The contents included a sheet of handwritten lyrics, a suit, and a cape.

“Unfortunately the lawyers have claimed that Paul would never have given any clothing away,” said auctioneer Paul Fairweather.

Filmmaker Tatia Pilieva paired up with Wren Studio to bring 20 strangers together and kiss for the first time in front of cameras, which became a viral hit.

Awkward result

The result seems like real-life romance. The twenty strangers talked  to each other awkwardly at first.

But once they’ve kissed, they suddenly became intimate and even compassionate toward each other.

After the awkwardness, the pairs just go for it.

Instant hit

“It’s cute to see the strangers be all hesitant at first (as most sane and sober people would be!) but once they go for it, it’s like watching fireworks, man (as barf-fully cheesy as that sounds),” Gizmodo’s Casey Chan said in a statement. “It’s unexpectedly touching, like watching a documentary turn into a romantic comedy that doesn’t suck.”

The post has received more than 4 million views since it was uploaded and is still climbing.

Drones, A Future Car Accessory

Renault released a concept SUV that’s getting a lot of attention for its travelling friend, a drone.

The Flying Companion

Future Car AccessoryAccording to a Slashdot report, the “flying companion” takes off from the vehicles hatchback to check on traffic conditions and off-road hazards. Controlled by a dashboard tablet or GPS system the drone will feed images back to the vehicle, much like the early missions of its military counterparts.

But, analysts note that the drone is more gimmick than an actual production proposal at this point. The possibility however, is already raising red flags among those concerned about how it might affect driving if it becomes a reality.

Safety Concerns

Driving concentration will undoubtedly be affected, as solo drivers will refer to the images now and again. Air traffic control will also be an issue, as multiple drones will vie for air space with each other, as well as Amazons delivery drones, if that becomes a reality too.

Sergio To Take On Another Challenge: ‘Put Maserati On The Map’

Posted on by Debra Lefler in Customer Service | Comments Off on Sergio To Take On Another Challenge: ‘Put Maserati On The Map’

MaseratiSergio Marchionne managed the impossible when he revived Chrysler, merged with the Fiat, and energized both companies with his personality, all in four short years as CEO. Now Sergio wants to add another item on his challenges list: putting Maserati on the map.

The Name

Though Maserati is a brand with some recall on US consumers, it falls short on converting it to actual sales. The American luxury market prefers the likes of Jaguar, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz, but Sergio wants to change all that.

The Plan

The CEO launched his campaign through a commercial ad on the Super Bowl, which is an unusual move for an inconspicuous brand, especially when competing with Chevrolet, Toyota, and Ford. But the ambitious part of the plan is yet to come. Marchionne wants to expand Maserati’s number of US dealer’s by two-thirds its current number and triple its annual global sales in two years.

Only time will tell if this aggressive plan pays off, but if there’s one thing Chrysler’s CEO has proven he can do, it’s win, and win big.

Japan’s Automotive Industry Bounces Back

Posted on by Debra Lefler in Customer Service | Comments Off on Japan’s Automotive Industry Bounces Back

As the yen continues to weaken, the country’s automotive industry is enjoying a surge unlike anything it’s experienced before. All the Japanese automakers are shirking off half a decade of trials and are now in a golden age of record profits.

More Money to Spend

Japan’s AutomotiveThe mounting stores will last the companies through another downturn, if ever one occurs, as well as give them more leeway to invest in new factories, R&D, adding content, hold off on price increases, or add more incentives for their products.

In fact, the stores are so large that Toyota is planning to spend a record amount on R&D, a whopping $8.55 billion, that’s more than General Motors’ 2013 income of $3.77 billion. Even Honda is forecasting a 13% rise on R&D spending for the current fiscal year, amounting to $5.99 billion.

More Money to Come

Four companies – Toyota, Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent company of Subaru – are forecasting net profits rise of more than 20 percent for the entire fiscal year.
