Facebook Regulates Gun Posts

facebook likeSocial networking giant Facebook has imposed stricter measures on posting anything related to guns.

Facebook said that posts from users who “indicate a willingness” to commit breaches against the law to sell firearms would be removed. The site would also restrict access to posts relating to the sale of guns to users over 18 years old.

Some groups have lobbied and pressured Facebook to change the site’s policy regarding the issue.

Speech may have consequences elsewhere’

“People sometimes use our free tools to discuss products that are regulated or controversial,” wrote the company in a blog post, following reports that some users have expressed concerns about the private sales of guns on the site.

“It is one of many areas where we face a difficult challenge balancing individuals’ desire to express themselves on our services, and recognizing that this speech may have consequences elsewhere,” said Facebook.

Facebook collaborated with various stakeholders including New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman in drafting the new policies which will also apply to Facebook-owned photo-sharing site Instagram.
