Travel Blues: 3 Ways to Adjust Your Sleep Patterns

SleepTraveling from one country to another means adjusting to their time zones. Whether for leisure or for business, it takes time for the body to adjust. It could change your mood, make you feel sick, and keep you up the whole night. Flight restlessness, jet lag, and anxiety are the last things you want to go through during a trip. These could wear you out immediately and prevent you from enjoying your destination.

Here are some tips to help adjust your sleeping patterns:

Consult Your Doctor for Medications

If you’re planning to take any medication, like mood enhancer supplements or sleeping pills, it’s best to consult with your doctor to know the right dosage. They can also advise the right time to take them – before or after meals, before sleeping, or after waking up – to increase their effectiveness. Ask for FDA-approved prescription medicines to help soothe your mind and body, as well.

Modify Your Eating and Sleeping Time

Prepare your body for time zone differences. Sleep an hour early or late to adjust your sleeping pattern. Depending on your destination, eat light meals according to its time zone. These transitions can help your body get used to sudden changes.

According to the Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine by MH Kryger, light exposure can affect your circadian rhythm. Make sure to have at least 15 minutes of direct sunlight after getting out of bed. Go for a walk or morning jog, sit by the window while having a drink, or eat breakfast outdoors.

Create the Ideal Environment

Find ways to fall asleep easier. Check the thermostat and make sure that the room isn’t colder than 54degrees Fahrenheit. Use a sleep mask to block light even if the room is already dark. If you have a favorite pillow or blanket, bring them to make you feel more comfortable.

Don’t let sleeping disorders ruin the fun. Regardless of your destination, it’s best to include sleep adjustment guidelines on your to-do list to avoid travel blues.
